Why I Recommend the Akkermansia Protocol

I get asked what probiotics I take more than almost anything else, and lately my answer almost always comes back to one bacterium: Akkermansia muciniphila. I wrote about the actual science behind it separately in Akkermansia 101, so I’ll keep the background short here. What I want to talk about instead is why this is the protocol I believe in, the specific combination I personally take and recommend to clients who want targeted support for gut barrier health and healthy GLP-1 function, on top of the food and lifestyle basics, not instead of them.

What’s in the Protocol

I built this as a three-product bundle through Pendulum, a brand I chose specifically because Akkermansia muciniphila is genuinely difficult to source as a stable, viable probiotic strain, and Pendulum has invested specifically in that:

  • Akkermansia, the core of the protocol. One capsule a day, formulated around Akkermansia muciniphila alongside Clostridium butyricum and Bifidobacterium infantis, with chicory inulin to help feed those strains.
  • Polyphenol Booster, one capsule a day. This one’s just a boost, not the main event, since polyphenols should already be coming in through food (see the foods list in Akkermansia 101); one capsule tops that up rather than trying to replace it.
  • Gut Fuel, one packet a day, a prebiotic fiber and polyphenol blend designed to round out the daily fiber intake that supports overall gut diversity.

Together, that’s one capsule, one capsule, and one packet a day, simple enough to actually stick with.

Why I Like This Combination

A lot of gut health supplements are single-ingredient and leave you to figure out the rest yourself. What I like about this protocol is that it pairs the targeted strain (Akkermansia) with the two things the research says actually help it thrive: polyphenols and prebiotic fiber. It’s not just take a probiotic and hope. It’s feeding the bacteria you’re introducing, not just introducing them.

Part of why I keep coming back to this specific strain: Akkermansia doesn’t just pass through, it actively works on your gut lining. As it feeds on the mucus layer, it triggers your gut to lay down fresh mucus in return, more of a renewal cycle than wear and tear. That same gut lining is also deeply wired to the rest of the body. Most of the traffic on the vagus nerve, the main line between gut and brain, runs from the gut up to the brain, and most of the body’s serotonin is made in the digestive tract, not the brain. Supporting gut health isn’t just a digestion thing, it’s connected to a lot more than people realize. I go into the actual research behind all of this in the Akkermansia 101 article, if you want the full picture.

This isn’t a fit for everyone, and it isn’t a replacement for eating well. I recommend it specifically for people who already have a reasonably solid foundation (varied plant foods, regular meals, some movement) and want additional, targeted support on top of that, particularly around gut barrier health or blood sugar balance.

The Akkermansia Protocol (Pendulum, via my Fullscript dispensary)

This is the exact three-product bundle I curated and use as my go-to recommendation for gut and GLP-1 support: Akkermansia, Polyphenol Booster, and Gut Fuel, from Pendulum.

How to Use It

The full protocol is one capsule of Akkermansia, one capsule of Polyphenol Booster, and one packet of Gut Fuel, once daily. I generally suggest taking the capsules with a meal and mixing the Gut Fuel packet into water or a smoothie. As with any new supplement routine, check with your doctor first, especially if you’re on medication or managing a health condition.

Not a Replacement for the Basics

I’ll say this the same way I say it about every supplement I recommend: this protocol is meant to support a foundation that’s already there, not replace one that isn’t. Varied plant foods, regular meals, movement, sleep, and stress management still do the heavy lifting. This is what I add on top when someone wants more targeted support, not a shortcut around the basics.

If you’ve read the science and you’re curious whether targeted Akkermansia support makes sense for you, this is the exact protocol I’d point you toward. And if you want the fuller research picture first, that’s in the Akkermansia 101 article.
